Winsor Pilates Reviews
Now, I'm of the mind that exercise
should be as simple as possible, and deliver maximum results with
little effort. In other words, I'm lazy. I still would like to think
of myself as an exercise enthusiast though (after all, I *do* feel
that shiver of excitement in my tummy whenever a sparkly new toy
flashes across the television screen at 3am, promising instantly
rippling abs and a gravity-defying rear-- complete with that one
good dent in the side of each cheek).
Long-winded as that was, it DID serve a purpose.
I am the Average Joe Exercise Gadget Consumer. I could stand to
get more thorough and regular exercise, but I am fit. I don't have
all the world's energy just a-rushin' through my veins, but I live
a moderately active lifestyle and yes, am a complete sucker when
it comes to new exercise trends.
So, Pilates: Is All That Flailing Really Exercise??
Yes, Pilates looks a bit awkward, what with
the panting and vigorous scissor- swishing of pointed legs, but just
like my somewhat lengthy review, all those movements serve very
specific purposes.
Mari Winsor has capitalized on the art/exercise
of Pilates, created by Joesph Pilates. She has also tweaked it,
and added what she calls "patented dynamic sequencing"
which are just a lot of buzz words that mean: she takes basic pilates
mat exercises, and does them in a different order than has previously
been taught. That's it.
So What's the Big Deal Then?
Alright, by the time I got the tapes home (I
am a hopeful SKEPTIC about these gadgets, so I didn't order them,
but waited until they were available for purchase from my local
Wal-Mart), I was really eager to get into my Lycra gym shorts and
sweat it up Winsor-style, but when I ripped open the cellophane
around my 3-tape Boxed Set, some pamplets fell out. One was a booklet
outlining "Mari's Win-in-10 Meal Plan", a fairly restrictive
10-day diet that when done in conjunction with the Winsor Pilates
workout supposedly enhances the results. This I quickly tossed aside
after seeing far too much "fat-free cottage cheese" and
other such frightening words all-too reminiscent of the starvation
diets we've all tried.
The other was "The Windsor Dozen",
Mari's 12 most effective pilates mat exercises that can be done
anywhere, anytime (for the gal who lives in cramped conditions,
can't always access a TV, or y'know...just doesn't feel like doing
more than 10 moves). This pamphlet had merit, and so I tucked it
away for a rainy day. I then realized I had to first watch the introduction
tape, which explained each of Mari's basic pilates movements, and
how to do them. Though this dampened my anticipation somewhat, I
was a dutiful pupil and paid close attention.
I was glad to have been so apt when I finally
popped in the second tape and centered myself on the rug in front
of my TV (no pilates mat is necessary, a rug/carpet/thick blanket
works fine, just so long as your back is protected). I was raring
to jump into the 20 Minute Workout.
In tape two, as in the introduction tape, Mari
moves slowly and uses controlled movement, centering on "the
box" or "the powerhouse" which is a fancy schmancy
term for "tummy". She begins to put several pilates mat
movements together, in a sequence. The workout becomes incredibly
demanding as you concentrate on the movement of breath in through
the nose and out through the mouth, the knitting of the ribs as
you raise your shoulders off the mat, and the flattening of the
bellybutton region during exhalation. Trust me, it ain't easy, especially
when you're a newbie and focusing all your energies on squeezing
your tush like you were crushing walnuts.
Though the workout was daunting, I finished
feeling energized, refreshed, and HEALTHY. The best part was, it
only took 20 minutes, AND I broke a sweat without any unattractive
jumping around. That was enough to get me to try it again, and to
try the longer "Accelerated Workout".
This one's a toughie. The moves are more difficult and not for beginners,
but the greatest part is that you CAN work up to it, and it actually
becomes noticeably easier with every workout, leaving you less frazzled
and more relaxed.
So Shut Up Already and Tell Us--Does It Work??
I was surprised at how weak my stomach muscles
were when I began, but nonetheless I pushed myself to do this workout,
and my abdominals became tightened and noticeably toned within just
a few workouts, which naturally fueled my craving to do more, more,
MORE Winsor Pilates. I couldn't get enough of the stuff, I was tripped
out on fitness.
The smooth, balletic, stretching-style movements
elongated my leg muscles without bulk, tightened up my belly, gave
me that "snooker-ball bottom" a la Bridget Jones, and
best of all, this was the first exercise I found that was able to
really slim and shape my hips. Greatest of all, it takes very few
workouts before you notice a real change, one that makes you stand
up in front of that mirror and shout "HA!! Take THAT, orange-peel-y
thighs!! Take THAT, butt that looks like I've been sitting on a
sack of golf balls!!"
Bottom Line:
Definitely worth adding to your exercise repertoire.
It's easier than most exercise
programs, just takes a bit of concentration and coordination at
first, which quickly
becomes second nature. You'll surprise yourself with how strong
and flexible you can be.
